From Star Wars to West Side Story, to a sacrificial tale of a Queen, and to love songs composed by a King, The JB Classical Music Festival 2017 invites you on a journey to experience classical music that transcends generations, soundscapes and cultures. “IN SYNC” This year we explore the synchronisation of influences, styles, and ideas – illustrating music at its most universal, as it tells stories of the times we find ourselves in (or out of) sync.

Sans Frontieres – 3 countries, 4 musicians, 1 stage
8.00pm, Amari Johor Bahru
Mireia Frutos Fernandez (Piano) and Ivan Torres (Cello) of Spain join Sayaka Ohira (Violin) of Japan and Benjamin Fabre (Viola) of France in a not-to-be-missed collaboration that brings together a delightful melting pot of cultures and influences to highlight composers from their respective homelands to showcase music at its most universal across languages, nationalities, and cultures.

Jazz Up – Rhapsody in Blue

feat. National Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble with Julian Chan (Saxophone) and Misa Yamamoto (Piano)
8.00pm, Amari Johor Bahru
The National Symphony Orchestra Wind Ensemble teams up with Misa Yamamoto (Piano) to explore one of the popular jazz-influenced masterpieces by George Gershwin, Rhapsody in Blue. Julian Chan (Saxophone) will take center stage in the first half of the concert to perform the fun and witty Scaramouche by Darius Milhaud. The concert will also feature another famous Gershwin work – Porgy and Bess; and a beautiful French classic, Le Temps des Cerises (The Time of Cherry).

Journey to the West Side

feat. Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia with guest soloist Bastien Baumet (Euphonium)
3.00pm, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios
The Philharmonic Winds of Malaysia is a non-profit organisation consisting of professional musicians and tertiary-level music students. The ensemble aims to promote wind and band music, while enhancing the art of wind playing amongst the community by creating a platform for wind players to play and perform. The ensemble will be performing alongside renowned Euphonium talent Bastian Baumet in a youthful and charming program, finishing with Bernstein’s critically-acclaimed West Side Story.

A Thai Odyssey

feat. Siam Sinfonietta (Thailand)
8.00pm, Pinewood Iskandar Malaysia Studios
Siam Sinfonietta was founded in 2010 by Thai/American composer Somtow Sucharitkul, Thai conductor Trisdee na Patalung, and the Bangkok Opera Foundation. The orchestra has won first place at the Summa Cum Laude International Youth Music Festival in the symphony orchestra category, toured in California, and performed at the Young Euro Fest in Berlin, Germany; this was followed in 2014 by performances in Carnegie Hall and another trip to Berlin, Prague and Abu Dhabi. The acclaimed orchestra will be presenting an explosive program which includes love songs from the late Thai king Rama IX, Bela Bartok’s The Miraculous Mandarin, and bring the festival to an exciting close with conductor Somtow Sucharitkul’s own composition – the Suriyothai Suite.
